Thunder through mine shafts while zooming past stalagmites, stalactites, goats and rattlers on a runaway mine train.  Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is really a fun rollercoaster and is the key attraction in Frontierland.  The speed of the ride is moderate and there aren’t huge dips to contend with and this is a perfect rollercoaster for kids and families not quite ready for huge plunges and loops.

Pirates have been spotted on this island and there could be buried treasure nearby.

Take one of Tom Sawyer’s rafts from New Orleans Square across to the Pirates’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island to search for the treasure exploring tree houses, caves, shipwrecks and forts.

Pirate’s Lair opened in May 2007 on Tom Sawyer Island, and it adds a pirate dimension to the adventure for your kids.  At the back of the island there is a location of pirate treasure where Jack Sparrow shows up for photo and autograph opportunities.  Towards the front of the island in the mill area there are multiple daily pirate shows featuring Jack Sparrow and his cast of pirates in a swashbuckling pirate show.

Step back in time aboard a 1787 replica of America’s first ship to sail around the world.  Explore the ship and the nautical museum as this ship cruises around Tom Sawyer Island on the River of the Americas. While in Frontierland, make sure you visit one of the more entertaining acts within Disneyland in an 1800’s saloon style setting.

Inside the Golden Horseshoe you can relax, wind down and catch one of the shows featuring Bill Hill and the Hillbillies.  This bluegrass comedy show features a foot stompin’ good time and a very unique experience that won’t soon be forgotten.  Inside the Golden Horseshoe you can also enjoy food, drinks, ice cream and such while relaxing at your saloon table enjoying the show.

Big Thunder Ranch also known as “a little piece of heaven” in a Disneyland version of a petting zoo featuring horses, cows, and goats and occasionally the Presidential pardoned turkey.

Big Thunder Ranch is located between Big Thunder Mountain and the Fantasyland area, and while it is rather small, it is interesting for kids to pets the animals and visit the log cabin within the ranch area.  During the Halloween and Christmas seasons this area is decorated in the current holiday theme and has special character entertainment on the Thunder Ranch stage.

Come aboard the Disneyland paddle wheeler riverboat Mark Twain for a relaxing cruise around the Rivers of America.  This is a great way to catch unique views of the scenery around Tom Sawyer Island and New Orleans Square.
